Het Verloren Wetboek

De tekst die u voor ogen hebt komt uit een boek, geschreven door wijlen broeder Rudolf Rijkeboer, waarbij een speurtocht werd geleverd naar de oorspronkelijke boodschap van de Bijbel, voortgekomen uit de overtuiging dat de kennis daarvan in de loop der tijden voor veel mensen verloren is geraakt. Niet alleen de scepsis van de 20^e eeuw, maar ook de invloeden van Grieks denken hebben die boodschap in belangrijke mate overschaduwd. Maar niet in de laatste plaats heeft ook de transformatie van de gemeente tot staatskerk onder Constantijn de Grote, in de vierde eeuw, een grote invloed gehad.

Toen de Judese koning Josia op jeugdige leeftijd in Jeruzalem de troon besteeg kwam er een einde aan een jarenlange periode van afgodendienst in Juda. De dienst van de God van de Bijbel werd weer hersteld en de situatie leek zich ten goede te hebben gekeerd. Maar in al die jaren was het volk van Juda vergeten wat die dienst werkelijk inhield. De kennis van hun God was grotendeels verloren gegaan, en wat restte waren slechts goede bedoelingen. Josia besloot echter Gods tempel te herstellen. En bij dat herstel kwam een boek tevoorschijn dat het Wetboek van Mozes bleek te zijn. Toen dat de koning werd voorgelezen besefte deze onmiddellijk dat de situatie, ondanks zijn reformatie, ver was gaan afwijken van Gods oorspronkelijke opdracht aan zijn volk. Er moest veel gebeuren en veel ‘puin’ worden geruimd voordat de situatie werkelijk weer was hersteld.

De huidige toestand in de christelijke wereld is niet ongelijk aan die in Juda ten tijde van Josia. In een periode van ruim duizend jaar, gedurende de middeleeuwen, waarin het gewone volk geen toegang had tot de Bijbel, en de middeleeuwse kerk ver verwijderd is geraakt van de gemeente van de eerste eeuw, is de kennis van de oorspronkelijke boodschap van de Bijbel grotendeels ‘zoekgeraakt’. En de Reformatie heeft daarin onvoldoende wezenlijke verandering gebracht. Wie, buiten een kleine kring van intensieve Bijbellezers, weet heden ten dage nog wat Gods werkelijke plan met de wereld is, of waarom Hij de aarde heeft geschapen; wat zijn werkelijke doel met de Schepping is, en met ons? Het staat allemaal duidelijk in dat oude boek, maar wie kent desondanks die boodschap nog? En sterker nog: wie heeft daar nog belangstelling voor?

  Zephaniah highlights the obvious hypocrisy going on in Judah’s service toward God. Molech was an Ammonite god represented usually as a man with a bull’s head, to whom the people of Israel sacrificed their children. Molech was the antithesis of the one true God. So, when His people turned from Him to such an abomination, He simply couldn’t stand it!

  Every city has its police and every nation its army for the purpose of controlling violence. When all else has failed, the bottom line is to meet violence with greater violence. Moses reformulated the basis of social organization as a revelation from God on how to build a peaceful society.
  However, the Bible is not primarily a revelation of laws, but rather an invitation to relationship with God. In the Biblical story God’s nature and character are revealed through his interactions with humans. The first lesson to understand is that God has given life, and the authority to take it belongs to God’s alone.
  We begin with God’s self revelation at Mt. Sinai where the law was given.  In Egypt Pharaoh was king and god. Pharaoh was ascribed to be Horus, one of the Egyptian deities. At Sinai, Yahweh was now the Hebrew’s God and king in place of Pharaoh. This is not what one normally would expect.  The human leader would normally become the new king, but in this case Moses was not the king, but only the King’s messenger.
