Uitdagende vordering

Wij kunnen de Bijbel voor ons vinden als een boek dat er om verzoekt om te worden gehoord als het Woord van God.

” Zo zegt de Heere “, en zinnen als deze, zijn een integraal onderdeel van het weefsel van het Oude Testament dat in vele Nederlandstalige kerkgemeenschappen de weg vond naar het volk. In meerder van die Christelijke geloofsgemeenschappen werden vroeger enkele delen van de Heilige Schrift regelmatig aangehaald, zonder de Naam van God te gebruiken. Vooral na de jaren 1960 verdween dat gebruik van de Naam van God sterk, al hoewel men in Nederland uit Calvinistische en Gereformeerde hoek toch al zeer veel “De Heere Heere” gebruikte. (Ook onze broeders in het Noorden gebruiken ook nog veelvuldig die titel.)

In die Nederlandse protestantse middens werd de Bijbel wel meer gelezen dan in de Vlaamse Katholieke middens, waar men in de Katholieke Kerken enkel maar enkele zinnen uit het evangelie en uit de epistels hoorde. Het Oude Testament werd daar meer over het hoofd gezien dan bij de noorderburen. Na de opkomst van een bepaalde groep Bijbelonderzoekers met de naam Getuigen van Jehovah, werd in Vlaanderen de Naam van God ook minder gebruikt en koos men daar ook voor de meer hedendaagse titel ‘Heer‘.

De aanpassing van de kerkgemeenschap aan de hedendaagse omgeving bracht met zich mee dat bepaalde theologen en een hele groep mensen de goddelijke inspiratie van de Heilige Schriften in twijfel gingen trekken. Indien men echter al die delen die zich beroepen op Goddelijke inspiratie, voor zichzelf, of herkennen in andere, zou verwijderen, dan zou er maar weinig overblijven van die Oude Geschriften. De Apostel Petrus zijn bewering dat de joodse geschriften werden geproduceerd toen “heilige mensen van God spraken als ze werden gedreven door de Heilige Geest ” (2 Petrus 1:21) kan men ofwel als waarheid aanschouwen ofwel  is het een vroom bedrog. Maar als we ons de mate waarin de Heer Jezus Christus zelf – om niet zijn apostelen te vermelden – erkend dat hetzelfde Oude Testament als het gezaghebbende Woord van God moet herkend worden, mag er dan ook geen twijfel over bestaan ​​dat de houding van een ware volgeling van Christus hetzelfde zou moeten zijn .

“Hebt gij niet gelezen?”, “Er staat geschreven”, “Wat zegt de Schrift” – dit waren favoriete uitdrukkingen van de Meester bij de verwijzing naar het grootste deel van wat we nu kennen als de Bijbel.
Aanzienlijk ook, beweerde de ‘Here Jezus’ (de Joodse Nazareen Jeshua) niet minder van een geïnspireerde autoriteit voor zijn eigen woorden (zie Johannes 17:8); Hij beloofde zijn apostelen dat zij ook bovennatuurlijke inspiratie en leiding zouden  krijgen door de Heilige Geest (Johannes 14:26 ; 15:26 , 27; 16:13-15) , en de vroege Bijbelchristenen namen het ook als een stichting doctrine dat “alle Schrift ( zowel het Oude als het Nieuwe Testament tegen die tijd) wordt ingegeven door God, en nuttig is … ” (2 Timotheüs 3:16).

“Maar de Trooster, de Heilige Geest, Welken de Vader zenden zal in Mijn Naam, Die zal u alles leren, en zal u indachtig maken alles, wat Ik u gezegd heb.” (Johannes 14:26 STV)

“26  Maar wanneer de Trooster zal gekomen zijn, Dien Ik u zenden zal van den Vader, [namelijk] de Geest der waarheid, Die van den Vader uitgaat, Die zal van Mij getuigen. 27 En gij zult ook getuigen, want gij zijt van den beginne met Mij geweest.” (Johannes 15:26-27 STV)

“13 Maar wanneer Die zal gekomen zijn, [namelijk] de Geest der waarheid, Hij zal u in al de waarheid leiden; want Hij zal van Zichzelven niet spreken, maar zo wat Hij zal gehoord hebben, zal Hij spreken, en de toekomende dingen zal Hij u verkondigen. 14 Die zal Mij verheerlijken; want Hij zal het uit het Mijne nemen, en zal het u verkondigen. 15 Al wat de Vader heeft, is Mijn; daarom heb Ik gezegd, dat Hij het uit het Mijne zal nemen, en u verkondigen.” (Johannes 16:13-15 STV)

“16 Al de Schrift is van God ingegeven, en is nuttig tot lering, tot wederlegging, tot verbetering, tot onderwijzing, die in de rechtvaardigheid is; 17 Opdat de mens Gods volmaakt zij, tot alle goed werk volmaaktelijk toegerust.” (2 Timotheüs 3:16-17 STV)

Zo’n uitdagende vordering van de Bijbel over zichzelf laat geen middenweg voor onze persoonlijke reactie op haar bericht. Wij moeten die uitspraak over haar zelf aanvaarden als een gewettigde ‘claim’ of verwerpen als een ongeldige opeising. Want als de bewering onwaar is, dan is de Bijbelse boodschap van geen echte waarde, en bevat het Evangelie van redding maar een hersenspinsel van de mens. Maar als de bewering waar is, dan vereist de Bijbelse boodschap gehoorzaamheid en biedt haar evangelie de ware hoop van het leven na de dood .

Wij mogen er van uit gaan dat de aansprak die de Bijbel maakt op de goddelijke inspiratie wel degelijk zo is. Als wij goed het Boek der boeken lezen zullen wij de bewijsvoering makkelijk kunnen vinden in de verwezenlijkingen van dat Woord van God. Als wij naar de verkondigingen zien die in dat Boek werden gebracht vele jaren, om niet te zeggen, soms eeuwen op voorhand, kan men niet anders dan inzien dat er een Speciale Bijzonder Hand achter dit alles zit.

De 66 boeken eisen de aandacht op en verdienen onze aandacht omdat zij een beeld scheppen van de geschiedenis van Gods Volk. Het verdient ook onze aandacht omdat de vele voorspellingen die er in gegeven worden met de tijd bewezen werden uitgevoerd te worden. Hiervoor moeten wij goed na denken wat wij willen geloven van die voorspellingen die dan nog moeten gebeuren.

Wij moeten er ons bewust van gewissen of de aanspraak van goddelijke inspiratie wel degelijk waar kan zijn. De bewering van de Bijbel is namelijk niet zo maar een academische oefening: het is een kwestie van leven en dood.

  Countless Christian theologians, teachers, and laymen have gone far astray because they tried to use the Bible as a substitute for God. Without God, the Book is useless. Unless we are aligned with Him every time we read with a submissive, eager-to-learn, open minded attitude, we are just going to keep recycling the same lies that have been passed around the Church for years. You need God to teach you truth, and as a Christian, you have Him dwelling right inside of you all the time. Now you just need to be wise enough to listen to Him. Don’t be impressed by manmade credentials and degrees. Many souls who have spent thousands of dollars to purchase a doctorate in biblical studies are total idiots when it comes to God’s truth because they aren’t listening to Him. You don’t have to follow their bad example. By all means, read your Bible—but only receive from it truths that the Holy Spirit is giving to you. Don’t let Paul, James, Luke, Matthew or anyone else be your final authority in life. Listen to God Himself, and He will tell you when the words of other men have merit for you.

  The canonization of specific writings as Scripture is an ecclesial act. The early Christians, of course, inherited the Bible of Judaism and then proceeded to add the writings we now call “New Testament.” This canonical process of discernment and judgment lasted centuries. There is no need to rehearse the history of the canonical process, which is beyond my competence in any case. The crucial point is clear: the acknowledgement of a given text as the written Word of God, and therefore as worthy of being read and preached in the eucharistic assembly, is an authoritative act of the community of believers.
  The Roman church says they proclaimed which books were actually inspired and placed them in one volume, so we should all be indebted to the Catholic Church for the New Testament. Actually the Catholic Church in 397 the Council of Carthage had the 27 books considered the canon. However these books were read and distributed as Scripture for over 300 years by individual Christians and church’s long before their church councils claimed to give us the Bible.

  Acknowledging the complexity and diversity of scripture should bring a reasonable amount of humility to the reader. The fact of the matter is that each author, like modern authors, has a purpose for why they are writing.

  Many claim that God only provided the thought and that man was at liberty to write God’s words in their own words. Yet, Bible writers said they wrote the words of God – not the thoughts of God.
  At the same time, it’s very dangerous for so many Christians, millions upon millions of people, who read the Bible to take the same book and claim it is telling them different things.Every rational human being has to admit that there is a problem with this. We must all ask ourselves, “Is the Bible really open to interpretation?”

  he Canon that we have, was finalized in 397 A.D., in the Council (Synod) of Carthage.  At least that Church – which gave us the Canon for the New Testament – was surely “a pillar and foundation of the truth” (Timothy I, 3:15).  If the Church had indeed preserved apostolic tradition, then it certainly was capable of deciding on the Canon of valid books for the New Testament; if, however, it had become corrupt and apostate, it would obviously not have preserved apostolic tradition and subsequently any decision that it may have reached for this Canon would have been erroneous!  To quote the Holy Bible: “Who can extract the clean from the unclean? No-one” (Job, 14:4 – Vamvas Translation). But, if we accept that apostolic tradition was properly preserved by that Church, qualifying it to decide on the Canon, then it could not have been in apostasy!
